A little over a year ago, I did a post highlighting the ingenuity of graphic artist Christoph Niemann, whose work is regularly featured in The New York Times and The New Yorker. I’m such a fan of his work, I thought another installment was in order. My original post included this line: “I don’t think we can be reminded often enough that’s it’s possible to look at a humdrum, pedestrian object and see it in a completely different way”, a sentiment that holds true today.
And I’ll pose the same question I did last year: Which of these is your favorite, and why?

I love those. It takes a particular sort of mind to come up with them, and I know I don’t have that sort of mind, but I really enjoy seeing them. My son Scott (now 16) likes the Star Wars one the best. I can’t pick a favorite, but the coffee-cup-head has helped me with a choice today.
I’m doing a project where I choose one fabric each day, cut a circle from it and sew it onto a square. All the squares go together into rows which are sewn together and by the end of the year, I’ll have a rather large quilt top showing the 365 days. (I’m really hoping at some point I can have an orange circle with a red circle around it and a red slash through it — Impeachment Day or something similar.) Anyway, I just bought some fabric yesterday with coffee cups on it and I didn’t have anything in particular I wanted to do for today, so now it will be a coffee cup inspired by the coffee-cup-head. 🙂

Melanie, your quilt in progress is impressive and will, perhaps needless to say, be HUGE when it’s done! Since 365 doesn’t divide evenly by 16 (which looks to be the # of squares per row), what are you plans for filling out the last row? FYI: I shared the link you provided with my sister-in-law, an avid quilter (quiltress?) like you. 🙂

The Quilt: There will be 23 rows of 16 squares. There are no great factors for 365. 5 rows times 73? Ew. So I tried a bunch of things and 16 X 23 gives me 368. The extra three spaces will either be blank or have a “2018” centered there. This will be a huge quilt — 80″ X 115″. I probably should have chosen smaller circles and smaller background squares, but I had to think about the size of circle that would fit pictures decently. I also considered a lot of design options like making it like a calendar, making the rows 14 or 21 wide, to represent weeks, etc. I love getting out my colored pencils and graph paper notebooks to design my quilts.
As of yesterday (day 80), I have 5 rows done. There’s a long way to go, but it’s fun to have a project like this that is done in a measured way, 15 or 20 minutes a day. Many of my quilts are done for fundraisers and there’s a definite deadline. As the deadline gets closer, the hours per day pile up fast! I don’t know what will happen in 2019, whether I’ll miss having this daily project or be thrilled I don’t have it. Or will I start a similar daily project for 2019 or maybe a weekly project? We’ll see!
By the way, I have 2 or 3 elephant circles already cut that I’ll use on the alumni weekend, whether I attend anything or not. 🙂

I like the guy waking up, sitting on the bed, with the coffee cup head, because that’s me every morning waking up in dire need of a cup, or four of coffee.

Two favorites: the empty coffee cup because it could be me at 6am, but the one I like best because it comes alive and jumps out of the page, is the woman beating the rug (playing card). Good stuff, Jeanne! – Vince

Have now shared these with the whole family (all 3!). No clear winner, though votes for the lady on the sketch pad (Ms Connection) and the light sabres (boy). I found myself drawn back to the scissor lady each viewing. I’m sure she’s too sophisticated for me, but the way she handles that broadsheet is kind of Wow!

The creativity in these works of art is amazing. The scissors and the curled paper forming the women’s lips are my two favorites.
