If you’re a regular reader of either The New York Times and/or The New Yorker, you’ll have seen the work of graphic artist/illustrator Christoph Niemann. If I had half an ounce of his ingenuity and creativity, I’d consider myself fortunate. Last night, I watched the first episode of Netflix’ new documentary series, Abstract: The Art of Design, which was devoted to Niemann. Just a few examples of his output are presented here. (These eight images, along with many other, equally delightful ones, are collected in his book, Sunday Sketching).
I don’t think we can be reminded often enough that’s it’s possible to look at a humdrum, pedestrian object and see it in a completely different way. One could argue that that’s a particularly vital skill these days.

Which of these is your favorite, and why?
And then of course there’s The Gummi Bear Chronicles….
OUTSTANDING!
What talent.
WIll send this to Nellie me

Isn’t it terrific?! (I had a feeling you’d appreciate it, given your artistic lineage.) 🙂 There’s lots of his work to see on-line (his own website, blogs, YouTube videos, etc.), and I bet Nellie would enjoy the chapter of the Netflix series I mentioned.

Wonderful. Was going to vote for the bread roll shaving, but I think the mosquito gets the gong. So very clever, and the blood adds that little edge…

Oh, the ink pot camera is brilliant too!

It’s hard to choose a favorite, but I think the ink pot camera does it for me…a lot has to do with that gorgeous wash of blue, but I also like the fact that an old means of capturing images–ink–is stepping in to represent a newer means of capturing images.

(I do enjoy and admire the concise way you get to the heart of visual images)

Wow…I was going to say I hate this guy but that would only be jealousy. It should be illegal to be that talented and creative. He processes/manipulates the obvious. One thinks immediately “of course why didn’t I see that?”

And not only is he insanely talented, he’s low-key and humble too. You should check out the Netflix doc series. One of the installments is about a photographer, Platon.
